Jealous Husband Says Jalen Hurts Has 'Pretty Privilege'

šŸš¦ THE Philly sports newsletter

Ā© Vincent Carchietta | 2024 Oct 20

The theme of todayā€™s send is jealousy.

We have a former NFL cornerback saying Jalen Hurts gets some kind of pass from criticism because of ā€œpretty privilege.ā€ Turns out said ex-cornerbackā€™s wife is a big Hurts fan.

Over in the Bronx, the Yankees traded for the Cubsā€™ Cody Bellinger, who is married to the ex of Giancarlo Stanton. The jealousy there isnā€™t necessarily between the two ballplayersā€¦ Itā€™s more the jealousy of Phillies fans waiting for Dave Dombrowski and his crew to make some damn moves.

Weā€™ll also discuss Villanova bball.

Maybe a more clever newsletter could link that to the theme. If you find one, weā€™ll be jealous.

In the email today:

šŸ’” Jealous Husband Says Jalen Hurts Has 'Pretty Privilege'

"Jalen Hurts is benefiting from pretty privilege. Because he got up on the press conference after the game, and he acted like he was Josh Allen. Look at this man. With his Kango, looking like Nino Brown. With three thousand million trillion dollars worth of diamonds on his neck. And he acted like he just went for 400 yards for three weeks in a row. Man, you had one good week passing, and everyone forgets it when he starts batting his eyes."

- Domonique Foxworth on ESPNā€™s Get Up! program Tuesday

Oh man. Lots to unpack here.

Here's the start of the press conference that Foxworth, a former NFL cornerback and frequent guest on ESPN's Get Up! (among other media endeavors), took issue with.

Hurts was definitely feeling himself a little bit after the Birds' win over the Steelers. Most wouldn't begrudge him for that. The quarterback took a boatload of criticism after the prior week's win over the Panthers, with media members across the nationā€”not to mention teammatesā€”criticizing the Eagles' passing attack.

So after throwing for 290 yards and two touchdowns with a 125.3 passer rating (and leading his team to a tenth straight victory), maybe Hurts deserves some accolades?

Well, not according to Foxworth. Hurts is getting some kind of pass, in Foxworth's view, because Hurts happens to be a very pretty man.

The assertion that Hurts is getting any kind of pass from the media is ludicrous to anyone paying attention to the Eagles. The leader of a 12-2 team, his play has been scrutinized and criticized to the point that you'd think the Eagles are 2-12. We know, because we do it right here at On Pattison!

Ok, so maybe he didn't have to go so hard on the ice:

But the comments struck many as out of place, and it didn't take long for internet sleuths to dig up a possible motive for Foxworth's comments: Ashley Manning Foxworth.

Well, damn. Putting two and two together, the comments make more sense now. But could Foxworth really have such a problem with just one conversation?

Uh oh. Weā€™re told a second video has hit the timeline.

Ok, we see whatā€™s happening here. Someone is caught up in his feelings and itā€™s affecting his work.

The Eagles' QB1 is a handsome guy. Deal with it, Foxworth. Act like the rest of us and just do your best to keep your wife away.

šŸ‘ļø Villanova Opens Big East Schedule With Rout of Pirates

There is no such thing as a must-win NCAA basketball game in mid-December. Thatā€™s the conventional logic.

But Villanovaā€™s very comfortable win over Seton Hall at the Pavillion last night probably qualified as, if not must-win, then good-damn-thing-they-won.

Villanova entered last nightā€™s game with Seton Hall leading the all-time series 84-44. Thatā€™s dominance.

Additionally, as we have noted here, Villanovaā€™s season got off to a pretty uneven start before the beginning of Big East play. Seton Hall is projected to be among the conferenceā€™s bottom-dwellers.

In its own way, losing to the Hall would have been more problematic than the earlier losses to Columbia and Saint Josephā€™s.

Perhaps the best news for Villanova is that they won this game with all-everything Eric Dixon playing below his standard for much of the contest. Dixon finished with 25 points, but 10 of them came in the last five minutes with his team already up 15.

With Dixon being just good as opposed to dominating, the Wildcats needed someone else to step up. Someone did.

Villanova has been searching for someone (anyone) to complement Dixon from a scoring perspective. It might come down to a different teammate each night. Last night, it was Perkins.

The win was also important given the Wildcatsā€™ upcoming schedule. They travel to Omaha to play Creighton four days before Christmas. Then theyā€™re off for ten days before again traveling some distance to play Butler in Indianapolis on January 1.

The Wildcats probably wonā€™t be favored again until they are home for DePaul on January 4. Again, all the more reason why chalking up another win over Seton Hall was vital.

Maybe it was a must-win after all.

šŸ‘€ Could Be a VERY INTERESTING Baseball Season in The Bronx

Some stories are so good, they truly stand the test of time.

In 1973, two New York Yankees pitchers held separate news conferences to drop a joint bombshell.

The strangest trade in baseball history occurred on March 4, 1973, when New York Yankees pitchers Mike Kekich and Fritz Peterson held separate news conferences during spring training. Their announcement: They had traded wives. And kids. And dogs.

"Actually, it was a husband trade -- Mike for me or me for Mike," Peterson told the Palm Beach Post in 2013.

Yesterdayā€™s news from the Bronx wasnā€™t quite as, uh, comprehensive as the Kekich/Peterson swap. The story actually started innocuously enough.

That makes sense. The Yankees have to do whatever they can to placate their spoiled-rotten fan base after the Mets signed Soto right out from under them.

But this was a dull, relatively run-of-the-mill hot stove item until a lot of X posts began pointing out a detail that the Passan drop left out.

Itā€™s true. Chase Bellinger (formerly Chase Carter) married the new Yankees centerfielder a year ago. The Bellingers have two children together.

Stanton and the then-Chase Carter dated in parts of 2018 and 2019.

On one hand, thatā€™s a pretty long time ago. Thatā€™s pre-COVID. Thatā€™s the winding down of the first Trump presidency. Thatā€™s before the Phillies lost to the Astros in the World Series shortly before the Eagles blew the Super Bowl to the Chiefs.

On the other handā€¦how much time would have to pass for you to go to work with your significant otherā€™s past situationship?

And this isnā€™t two corporate wonks working in cubicles on the same floor of a high-rise or two construction workers clocking into the same site but working separately. These guys are going to be in close quarters together, minimally, for seven months.

Maybe they can all be adults about it. Maybe.

The only thing we know for sure is this: If Bellinger and Stanton ever have an issue of any kind, the New York media will point in only one direction to explain the strife.
