The Eagles put together their most complete game of the season in a 37-17 road win over the Bengals. Tyrese Maxey dropped 45 points in a Sixers overtime victory. And the Flyers had a wildly eventful weekend that, well, left them about where they began.
Let’s discuss it all.
In the email today:
💪 Top 5 Plays From Eagles Win Over Bengals
Relive Sunday’s Eagles game through five of their best plays:
5 - Jalen Hurts throws to AJ Brown for 29 yards
The Bengals opened Sunday’s game with a surgical, 10-minute, 17-play touchdown drive. Joe Burrow completed 11 of 12 passes and Cincy converted on five third downs.
It’s the type of drive that can demoralize an opponent. If the Eagles didn’t counter with some offense of their own, the game could have slipped away from them early.
But Hurts and the Birds were up for the challenge. They put together a 10-play, 56-yard drive ending in a field goal. 29 of those yards came on a sweet catch and run by Brown.
4 - Saquon Barkley bulldozes defender, hurdles camera guy
Hurts rushed for three touchdowns, but Barkley had himself a day as well: 22 carries for 108 yards. With 5:23 left in the game, he broke loose to the right side, lowered his shoulder into a defender at the Bengals’ 15 yard line, and tiptoed down the sideline for 14 more yards before getting pushed out of bounds.
Hurdling a camera man at the end? Icing on the cake.

3 - Cooper DeJean makes a huge fourth down stop
Trailing 24-17 near the end of the third quarter, the Bengals tried to convert a fourth and one from their own 37 yard line. Burrow threw quickly to Ja’Marr Chase behind the line of scrimmage, but Cooper DeJean was there to make a clean stop.
Four plays later, the Birds kicked a field goal to make it a two-score game.
2 - Isaiah Rodgers tips ball to CJGJ for an interception
Stepping in for an injured Darius Slay, Isaiah Rodgers blanketed Chase on a fourth-quarter pass attempt down the sideline. In perfect position, Rodgers swatted the deep ball directly to teammate C.J. Gardner-Johnson for an interception.

1 - Jalen Hurts connects with DeVonta Smith for a 45-yard touchdown
Just a beautiful deep ball here from Hurts. About 55 yards in the air. And a great catch from Smith, who has earned his QB’s trust by consistently coming down with the ball on contested passes.
The score put the Birds up 24-17 and they never looked back.
I think we just witnessed the best throw & catch of the Jalen Hurts to DeVonta Smith era. 🔥🔥🔥

👀 The Flyers Had a Weekend
You think you know a hockey team. 72 hours later, it turns out, yeah, you basically had them pegged all along.
Our assessment of the Flyers as recently as Thursday night was that this would be another burnt season where they vacillated between scrappy and helpless. A lot of stuff happened these past few days, but we ended up back where we started.
At least this weekend, the Flyers were anything but boring.

Saturday night’s win over the Minnesota Wild snapped a six-game losing streak.
The win also featured a hat trick from Sean Couturier, who hit a career milestone in the doing.

Saturday night’s win was its own rich story. But you know what they say about the amount of rain you get when it hasn’t rained in a while.
Meanwhile, the Flyers made some noteworthy personnel moves.
#Flyers have sent 18-year-old Jett Luchanko back to OHL Guelph for the season after a four-game introduction to #NHL.
PHI is thrilled with their pick, he certainly exceeded expectations heading into camp, and they want him to play as many minutes in as many situations possible.

This wasn’t wholly shocking. The team was reeling, and the Flyers have higher hopes for Luchanko than slogging through what might be a trying season. He wasn’t getting ice time. Going back to the OHL was the only sensible path for Luchanko now.
The trouble with that logic is what the Flyers did with their goaltending situation.
Welcome to The National, Aleksei Kolosov!

The Flyers probably had to make this move. In nine games, Samuel Ersson and Ivan Fedotov combined for a GAA of 4.5. That’s not competitive at the NHL level, or any level really.
So the Flyers pressed the last red button at their disposal this season (probably) and summoned Kolosov from Lehigh Valley.
It…didn't go great.
Really kind of the Flyers to give Aleksei Kolosov a ton of work and not ease him into his first NHL game.

The Flyers lost 4-3 last night. They gave up three unanswered goals in the second period. For about 57 minutes, the team in front of Kolosov was as comprehensively inconsistent and occasionally incompetent as the team Ersson and Fedotov dealt with.
Then the Flyers scored twice in 29 seconds to give the brave souls who stayed for the end of a rout some late hope. Too little, too late.
So, after an eventful Flyers weekend, a lot changed and also very little changed.
👍️ Shorthanded Sixers Gut Out OT Win In Indiana
The vibes around the Sixers weren’t good heading into Sunday’s matinee with the Pacers.
The Sixers were again without Joel Embiid and Paul George. The Pacers started their version of a “Big Three” in Pascal Siakam, Tyrese Haliburton and Myles Turner.
Another Sixers loss — particularly after Friday night’s loss in Toronto to the Raptors — would have left the Sixers reeling at 0-3. Moreover, it would seem like their extended preseason had no end in sight.
Sometimes, though, you really only need one superstar.

The Pacers have to wonder how they lost this game. The simple answer? Maxey wouldn’t let the Sixers lose again.
The other thing you need to know about this game is that it seemed like it would never end. The teams combined to shoot 65 free throws, and the last minutes of both regulation and overtime were interminable.
BELT 2 A** @Pacers
You guys had your entire team healthy and home with the refs and still lost to the Sixers without Embiid and Paul George

Ultimately 1-2 is vastly different from 0-3. Maxey didn’t save the season.
He stopped the bleeding, though. Sometimes, that’s all that matters.
